Your IA Card Is Expiring: How CITB and CSCS Are Helping You Stay Qualified

If you hold an Industry Accreditation (IA) card, you might already know that all IA cards issued from January 1, 2020, will expire on December 31, 2024. But don’t worry—this doesn’t mean the end of your career in construction. Thanks to support from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS), you have access to grants and training options to help you transition to a recognised qualification and secure your place on-site.

Why Are IA Cards Being Phased Out?

Industry Accreditation, or “grandfather rights,” was introduced as a way for experienced workers to obtain CSCS cards without formal qualifications. However, the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) has now mandated that all Construction industry card schemes operate with nationally recognised qualifications. This ensures a fully trained, competent, and qualified workforce that aligns with the safety and quality expectations set by the Building Safety Act.

What Does This Mean for You?

Starting January 1, 2025, IA cards will no longer be valid. Without a recognised qualification, you could lose access to job sites. But here’s the good news:

1. Temporary Red Cards Are Available

If you’re waiting to complete your qualification, CSCS offers temporary red cards. These non-renewable cards ensure you can continue working while you transition to a recognised qualification.

2. Flexible Assessment Options

You don’t need to attend college to achieve your qualification. Assessors can visit your workplace or evaluate you remotely, making the process seamless and convenient.

3. Grants Are Available

CITB is offering enhanced grants for certain NVQ Diplomas/SVQs. If your employer is CITB-registered, they can claim £1,250 for supervision qualifications or £1,500 for management qualifications. This reduces the financial burden and ensures you’re supported every step of the way.

How Can You Benefit from These Changes?

Transitioning to a recognised qualification is more than just meeting industry standards—it’s an opportunity to enhance your career prospects. Here’s why you should act now:

Career Progression: With a Level 2 or higher NVQ Diploma/SVQ, you’ll unlock better job opportunities, higher pay, and long-term career growth.

Job Security: Having a recognised qualification ensures your skills are validated, making you an asset to employers.

Ease of Transition: The support offered by CITB and CSCS makes it easier than ever to complete your qualification without disrupting your work.

What Should You Do Next?

1.  Check Your Eligibility

Visit the CSCS website to see if you qualify for a temporary red card or if your existing qualifications meet the requirements for other CSCS cards.

2. Start Your Training Journey

Enrol in an NVQ Diploma/SVQ relevant to your role. If you’re unsure which qualification is right for you, Construction Helpline can guide you through the options.

3. Inform Your Employer

If your employer is CITB-registered, let them know about the grants available. They can claim back the costs of your qualification, making the process even more accessible.

Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late!

The December 31, 2024, deadline is fast approaching. Take control of your future by transitioning to a recognised qualification today. With CITB grants, flexible assessments, and support from Construction Helpline, upgrading your skills has never been easier.
